In the 1890s, Cannes became an important centre for the Russian community on the Riviera when Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich purchased a home here following his banishment from Russia due to his morgantic marriage to Countess Sophoe von Merenberg. The Russian-Orthodox Church of Cannes – called St Michael the Archangel is located in the east of the town, on 40 Boulevard Alexandre III. It was one of Grand Duke Michael’s two great building projects: the other was the local golf club. The church was completed in 1896 and was commissioned by the Empress Marie Feodorovna wife of Tsar Alexander III and designed by the architect Louis Nouveau at the 19th century. It has a Greek cross design and a varnished tile roof
in 1921 the marriage of Grand Duke Andrei Vladimirovich and the ballerina Mathilde Kshesinskaia was celebrated here. Under the church is located a large crypt, where are buried many famous people: Archpriest Gregory Ostroumov who worked on the construction of the Temple, Prince Peter Alexandrovich of Oldenburg, the Grand Duke Nicolas and his wife Anastasia, the Grand Duke Peter Nikolaevich and his wife Milica Nikolaevna, daughter of King Nicolas I of Montenegro.
