Queen Elizabeth II 1952 in Kenya Kilimanjaro Antique Photo by her Lady-in-Waiting

The photograph was taken by Dame Henriette, Lady Abel Smith (6 June 1914 – 3 May 2005), whilst flying with HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1952. She was Lady-in-Waiting to Queen Elizabeth II from 1949 to 1987. Born Henriette Alice Cadogan, the daughter of Commander Francis Charles Cadogan, RN, and Ruth Evelyn Howard, she held the office of Lady-in-Waiting to Queen Elizabeth II from 1949 to 1987. In 1987, she became an Extra Lady-in-Waiting.

In 1952, Queen Elizabeth II learnt of her accession to the British throne while she was a guest at Treetops Lodge following the death of her father, King George II. Lady Abel Smith as Lady-in-Waiting accompanied her on this trip and this photo was taken from their aeroplane whilt travelling to Kenya. She has annotated the back of the photo:
