Souvenir Fund Raiser Ellesmere Port Mosquito Bombers 1943 RAF Signed Air Vice Marshall Stevens WWII

£95.00

Fine antique Souvenir Programme for a Fundraiser for £200,000 for 8 Mosuito bombers and 8 Typhoon Fighters, held at Ellesmere Port, entitled Wings for Victory, dated May 15-22, 1943, signed by Air Vice Marshal Cecil Alfred Stevens (1898-1958). it is accompanied by the original Song Sheet, 8 pages in total.

The Wings for Victory Week funds went towards the purchase of a new aircraft to help the War Effort.

Stevens attended Sandhurst, and became an Officer in The Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding) Regiment. He subsequently resigned his commission to go into the RAF. On Christmas Eve 1917 he led the first raid on Mannheim, the longest duration bombing raid ever made up to that time. He was promoted Wing Commander in July 1936 and awarded the CB for his work in the Far East. He took part in over thirty successful operations over enemy lines, including long-distance photographic reconnaissances and bombing raids. On one occasion he was heavily attacked by enemy aeroplanes, one of which he destroyed and returned with excellent  photographs and with his machine badly shot about. During all the raids in which he acted as leader he lost only one machine, and invariably gave a splendid example of skill and courage.
